We’ve all been there. Stuck in traffic, a big rig in front of you and a thick cloud of diesel fumes descends on your car. Of course the first reaction is to click the recirculate button on your AC to try to limit the fumes that enter your car. Although that might be a little tougher if you are in a convertible or on a motorcycle. At that point you can’t help but wonder why those dreaded smog regulations don’t apply to large trucks.

Yes that plume of diesel exhaust is legal. According to the DMV “smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, motorcycles, trailers, or gasoline powered vehicles 1975 and older.” (DMV Smog Regulations).

For the last several years the residents of Mt. View California have watched the 2 seater Google self driving car navigate the streets. This “Self Driving” vehicle built by Lexus was meant as more of a test vehicle than one that was set for production with the top speed being about 25 miles an hour. One of the biggest questions that entered my mind while watching this little and not very exciting car drive by is when a more consumer oriented vehicle might be offered publicly. One of the many answers to that question was debuted in 2017 by Volkswagen. The Volkswagen I.D. Crozz a crossover vehicle with “I.D. Pilot” mode that drives autonomously!

Herndon, VA (August 1, 2016) — Volkswagen of America, Inc. is pleased to announce that the Volkswagen BUDD-e has been named “2016 Concept Truck of the Year” at the 15th Annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards. Judges recognized the all-electric microbus concept for raising the standards of automotive design, with features that address both the utility and mobility needs of the present and future. The award ceremony was held at the Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s in Plymouth, Mich., on July 31, 2016.

VW Sport coup Concept gteWolfsburg/Geneva, March 2015 —Volkswagen will debut the Sport Coupé Concept GTE at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show, heralding a new and progressive Volkswagen design language. “Evolution and revolution come together in the Sport Coupé Concept GTE. Toyota and Lexus announced a couple of their planned debuts for the 2012 New York International Auto Show. The new Lexus is the sixth-generation of the Lexus-ES, while the new Toyota sedan that will be debuted has only been identified as “all-new U.S.-designed sedan”.

A press conference will be held for the Lexus ES on Wednesday April 4th and the car will be displayed April 6-15th at the Lexus exhibit at the NY Auto Show. Toyota is planning the debut of its new sedan in the Jacob Javits Center at the Auto Show in the Galleria room. The first look will happen at 10am on April 5th. (more…)
