Volkswagen ID Cross

Volkswagen ID Cross

For the last several years the residents of Mt. View California have watched the 2 seater Google self driving car navigate the streets. This “Self Driving” vehicle built by Lexus was meant as more of a test vehicle than one that was set for production with the top speed being about 25 miles an hour. One of the biggest questions that entered my mind while watching this little and not very exciting car drive by is when a more consumer oriented vehicle might be offered publicly. One of the many answers to that question was debuted in 2017 by Volkswagen. The Volkswagen I.D. Crozz a crossover vehicle with “I.D. Pilot” mode that drives autonomously!

Unlike the “Google Mobile” the I.D. Cross is a

sporty futuristic vehicle with many features that are sure to attract future car buyer. Buyers that are going to have to wait a couple years for that first test drive, production is set for 2010. In addition to the crossover vehicle dubbed a “CUV” by Volkswagen there will be two other futuristic self driven vehicles the I.D. and the I.D. Buzz which will be introduced in 2010.

Two electric motors will power this all electric vehicle using an 83 KWh Lithium battery placed under the floorboard of the CUV. These two motors can produce a combined 302 horsepower and has a top speed of 112 MPH. This is comparable to the HP of vehicles like the 2016 Volvo S60 T6 Drive-E, the Infinity Q50 3.0T, Toyota Avalon and Ford Mustang Ecoboost. Volkswagen I.D. Cross Specifications

The range of this sporty zero-emission electric car is about 300 miles making it comparable to many gas powered vehicles. One of the past drawbacks of electric vehicles was the charging time, using a 150kw dc charger I.D. Cross owners can charge their car up to 80% in just 30 minutes making a charge possible in about the time it takes to eat a burger at the Carls JR. in Redding!

In addition to the futuristic interior the I.D. Cross has an equally futuristic looking interior. Describing the next generation set to launch in 2015 Volkswagen touts its “multi-functional seating”, and a “multi-functional steering wheel” that retracts into the dashboard and fuses with the digital instruments when the Fully automated I.D. pilot is activated (kind of reminds me of the car in Irobot). The “active Info Display and merged steering wheel form a single unit that is augmented with a “reality head-up display”.

To keep you occupied during the ride a 10.2 inch tablet is incorporated into the instrument panel allowing you to access your messages, media, telephone and navigation. A rather interesting (and possible depressing) feature is a “Clean Air menu”. With this you can check out the air quality which considering the smog levels in most cities we can assume will always read “bad!”.

The Reality Heads Up Display

Yet another futuristic feature! Imagine flipping on the directions mode of your display and having the virtual images appear to be displayed 23-49 feet in front of your car! Realistic direction arrows are projected to show where the driver is heading and becomes part of the driver’s 3 dimensional field of view.

So, will the concepts really turn into reality? Only time will tell, but it was fun checking Volkswagen’s view of our automotive future!
